Why is Taiwan Strait Tension happening?
China (PRC) vs Taiwan (ROC) ยท Since 1949-10-01
๐What is happening?
Taiwan (Republic of China) has governed itself separately from mainland China (People's Republic of China) since 1949 after the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War. China claims Taiwan as a province and has never renounced the use of force to achieve 'reunification.' Taiwan Strait tensions are a global economic concern because Taiwan produces ~90% of the world's most advanced semiconductors.
๐ฅWho is fighting?
China (PRC) under Xi Jinping has intensified military pressure on Taiwan, with PLA aircraft and navy vessels regularly crossing the median line of the strait. Taiwan (ROC) under President Lai Ching-te maintains de facto independence with US arms sales as the primary security guarantee. The US has a legal commitment (Taiwan Relations Act) to provide Taiwan with defensive arms. Japan is deeply concerned given proximity.
โWhy did it start?
China views Taiwan as a breakaway province and Xi Jinping has tied his legacy to 'reunification.' Taiwan's population has developed a distinct Taiwanese identity separate from Chinese identity. Control of Taiwan would give China strategic dominance over Pacific shipping lanes and eliminate a democratic model challenging CCP legitimacy.
๐ฐWhat's the latest?
As of April 2026, China conducted its largest-ever Taiwan encirclement exercise in March 2026, with 70+ PLA aircraft crossing the median line. The US deployed two carrier strike groups to the region. Taiwan has accelerated indigenous defense production. US arms sales including F-16s and Harpoon missiles continue.
๐Where is it happening?
The Taiwan Strait (180km wide) is the primary flashpoint. PLA exercises encircle Taiwan from all sides. The Pratas Islands and Kinmen/Matsu (Taiwan-held) are potential early flashpoints. The Indo-Pacific theater encompasses US bases in Japan, Guam, and Hawaii.
